Tina Leser sketches and papers, 1940-1979.

In addition to 45 boxes of sketches, the collection includes three unboxed oversized sketchbooks and one 3-ring binder of sketches, representative of how the materials were housed when accessioned. Most of the 4,051 sketches are in acrylic, on water color paper, tissue or pellon. Press clippings and photographs relate primarily to the Japanese National Design Contest which Leser sponsored and which gave one of several awards in her name.

American fashion designer known for her leisure wear, beach ensembles and play wear. Born Christine Wetherill Shillard-Smith in 1910, she trained at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the School of Industrial Arts in Philadelphia and the Sorbonne. In 1935 she opened a shop in Hawaii where she sold high quality ready-to-wear and custom clothing. Early Leser designs featured hand painted motifs on such unusual fabrics as sail cloth and "paluke".
